The Lord's Prayer Part II - Talking to the Father about the Family, Part 50 of 61
TEXT: "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen" (Matthew 6:9-12).
IDEA: Temptation takes place in every area of life.
PURPOSE: To help listeners realize that we can be tempted in every area of our lives.
Jesus tells us in the Sermon on the Mount that we are to pray, “Lead us not into temptation.”
I. When you think about “temptation,” what pictures come to your mind?
Do you think of your favorite sin?
How about the temptations to the body?
Can some of the temptations be some things we would really want?
II. How do you respond to this request?
Two things I ask of you, O Lord; Do not refuse me before I die.
Keep falsehood and lies far from me.
Give me neither poverty or riches, but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise I may have too much and disown you, and say, “Who is the Lord?”
Or I may become poor and steal and so dishonor the name of my God.
(Proverbs 30:7-9, the requests of Agur)
Can you imagine anyone really asking God for these things for these reasons?
III. Do you think many people would think of riches as a danger?
Would we pray about the spiritual dangers of poverty?
