The Purpose of the Ten Commandments, Part 10 of 26

TEXT: "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it, but he who does the will of God abides forever" (1 John 2:15-17).

IDEA: The Law reveals the deceitfulness of sin.

PURPOSE: To help listeners recognize how we are deceived about the commands of God by our sinfulness.

Do you think that Satan is the only source of temptation?

I. The Bible points to at least three sources of temptation, 1 John 2:15-17—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. We sometimes speak of these as "the world, the flesh, and the devil."

The world: what do you think the Bible means by "the world"?

What could it mean?

What does it mean?

Satan: How does the Bible present him?

Do you believe there is an evil personage with an intellect and a will that leads men and women into disobedience to God?

The flesh: What do you think the Bible means by "the flesh"?

Do you think it is always easy to separate out the sources of our temptation?
